The city of Pretoria was proclaimed on 16 November, 1855.
The motivation for settling down in this area was always the abundance of water - the Apies Rivier and the rich spring that feeds it.
At present the municipality requires 800 million litres of water per day of which 7.5% is supplied from groundwater.
Fountains Valley still supply the central business district of water to this day. The Upper and Lower Fountains in Pretoria are the main reasons for historical events in Pretoria, leading to it becoming the capital of South Africa. The city developed around these springs, and for the first half of its existence was supplied solely from the Upper and Lower Fountain.
Protected from evaporation and pollution, and significantly cheaper, groundwater is the reason for Pretoria's founding and its rise to the leading world city it is today.
