Collecting enough water bottles to support three and a half people, Celeste is 30 weeks pregnant, was the first step to creating this raft. For the past two months we have been working together with garbage collectors who generate an income by keeping Pretoria clean, to collect a 1000 bottles.
Each week the garbage collectors get together in the park across the Union Buildings to sort out the material they have gathered for recycling purposes. The water bottles are then separated from the rest of the material to clean and seal in order to ensure that they are water proof.
After the bottles have been prepared they are given to local women in the community who crochet them together with plastic bags that have been thrown away in the city. The city's garbage has given form to SHE, the raft made from 100% recycled material that generate job opportunities in the CBD of Pretoria.
