SHE is a raft built from a 1000 water bottels collected in the city of Pretoria - stitched together with plastic bags found in the area. The bottles are crochet together with plastic bags by employing local women in the community. The raft will then journey down the Apies River by three women, Celeste Theron, Ilze Wessels, and Danii Blaine.
The community is invited to partake in this project by marching this 2km journey with the raft from one of Pretoria's oldest bridges, the Leeubrug, to The Pretoria Zoo on the 26th of October. Involvement would also be appreciated by helping to collect water bottles and plastic bags, by helping out with the crochet work, or by donating a part of the salary we are supplying to the women who are creating the crochet work.
The main objective of this project is to create awareness of the importance of water, notably, groundwater, in the history of Pretoria as part of the Cool Capital 2014 Biennale.
We are drawing attention to Pretoria's water-related history throughout the past with the emphasis on the groundwater supply
and supply interested parties with information regarding the occurrence of groundwater in Pretoria; a valuable source of water which is often disregarded.
Such an awareness project will be beneficial in terms of community engagement and education, creating opportunity for educators and the general public to appreciate the importance of hydraeology in South Africa and specifically in Pretoria .
Public awareness is also essential in the long term conservation of water resources. For this reason the focus is more on the awareness of groundwater and to a lesser extent surface hydrology.
